Women’s MMA Makes ESPN Plays of the Week

How far has MMA come in the eyes of the mainstream media? The recent Strikeforce Challengers event from this weekend actually made ESPN Sportscenter’s “Plays of the Week”.

…4.

Anchor Stuart Scott then said he wants to see Kaufman fight Christy Cyborg , at least that’s what it sounded like to me. OK, not her name and also not the same weight class, but props for knowing the baddest female MMA fighter on the globe. And for putting women’s MMA on your plays of the week.
According to MMA Junkie, the Kaufman vs. Modafferi fight received the most viewers of any bout on the card. At one point their fight had 254,000 viewers. The main event of Lolohea Mahe vs. Shane Del Rosario landed just over 225k viewers.
It’s not earth-shaking to MMA or where it’s going, but it’s pretty cool and somewhat significant that the Kaufman/Modafferi bout landed on the ESPN highlights and also was the most-watched fight of the night. I think women’s MMA is awesome, and often times more entertaining than the men. I’m surprised that Dana White hasn’t yet started a women’s division, if only to bite out of Scott Coker and Strikeforce’s apple.

Meet UFC’s Chael Sonnen

Although hated by many in the world of mixed martial arts, Chael Sonnen is a man to be reckoned with; inside the cage and in the political arena. He is one of the world’s top ten middleweights, but why doesn’t anyone know who he is?

MMA needs a proper Hall of Fame

Whatever the cause, I can’t stop wondering: Why doesn’t MMA have a Hall of Fame?

…On these increasingly rare weekends with no major MMA events, a fight fan’s mind tends to wander. It meanders back to the days when we had to wait months between shows. It imagines a future where we never get a weekend off. And it considers whether that would be a blessing or a curse. But me, my mind keeps returning to the same subject as I stare out the window during another lazy summer day. Maybe the heat is getting to me, or maybe I’ve just been watching too many old Pride videos on the Internet. Whatever the cause, I can’t stop wondering: Why doesn’t MMA have a Hall of Fame? I know what you’re thinking. Why should a sport that’s still fairly young — at least in its current form — have any need to honor heroes who are, in many cases, still stubbornly hanging on? Why does it even matter? And why can’t we just be content with the UFC Hall of Fame? All good questions. MMA needs a Hall of Fame in the same way every major sport does, which is to say that it doesn’t need one at all — it’s just fun to have. A…

5 Spectacular MMA Submissions [Vids]

Sometimes all an opponent can do is tap, snap or take a nap.

…n
an act of submitting to the authority or control of another
Knockouts are thrilling. You’ll see them in the promos and highlights. But in MMA, making your opponent quit might be more fulfilling than a knockout by strikes. Here are 5 spectacular MMA submissions.
Shuichiro Katsumura’s Incredible Ninja Choke

Dan Hornbuckle’s Sick Kimura at Bellator 19

Randy Couture Choked Out Via Guillotine

Toby Imada’s Famous Inverted Triangle at Bellator 5

Shinya Aoki Subs Tatsuya Kawajiri at Dream 15

That last video demonstrates the courage and will you need to succeed at MMA. If you get knocked out, you’re simply done. If you get caught in a submission, you have to see how large your pain threshold is and you have to have the skills to escape. It’s a beautiful part of MMA. Sometimes all an opponent can do is tap, snap or take a nap.

Jon "Bones" Jones…Is he the UFC’s new Kimbo Slice?

On August 1, the UFC will, for only the second time, broadcast live fights on the Versus network. Headlining this free fight card is Jon Bones Jones (10-1)

…It was just two years ago that Kevin Kimbo Slice Fergusson was riding high atop a three fight win streak conquering the likes of Tank Abbott and James Thompson. He had fought his way from YouTube to national television. All implications suggested that Slice was on the fast track to have major success in Mixed Martial Arts. But that all changed in the blink of an eye, or here, a head butt.
In the fall of 2008, Kimbo was scheduled to fight the well known, highly respected, former UFC veteran Ken Shamrock. Ken was forced to pull out just hours before the event due to cut he received after being head butted during training. There he was, Mr. YouTube Sensation, Mr. Main Event without an opponent. EliteXC did, however, manage to find an eager, albeit relatively unknown, Seth Petruzelli. When alerted to the last minute replacement, casual fans simply wrote off the ‘pink haired guy’ as another KO win for…

UFC 116 Fight Preview: Lesnar vs Carwin

The UFC 116 fights are going to bring some early Independence Day fireworks, especially when Lesnar and Carwin collide for the heavyweight championship!

…He lost both of his previous UFC bouts and has only fought twice in the past two years. In any case, Petruzelli will be facing Ricardo Romero (10-1) on the first scheduled SpikeTV UFC 116 fight card. Romero is one of the talented stars over in Ring of Combat. He was 5-0 in 2009 with the organization, however this will be Romero’s fist bout with the UFC.
Ex-NFL player and TUF heavyweight Brendan Schuab (5-1, 1-1 in the UFC) will fight Chris Tuchscherer (18-2, 1-1 in the UFC) in the second of the two scheduled SpikeTV bouts. Both men have a history of their fights ending in the first round. Every single one of Schuab’s six fights have ended in the first round by knockout and 16 of Tuchcherer’s fights have ended before the stoppage of the first bells. Looks like the UFC wants to spark some interest before the main card!
UFC 116 Fight Main Card
Australian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxer George Sotiropoulous (12-2, 5-0 in the UFC) takes on Kurt Pellegrino (15-4, 7-3 in the UFC) in the main card’s scheduled opening…

5 MMA Fighters That Should Give It Up

Frank Shamrock recently announced his retirement from MMA. Here are 5 other fighters that should call it a career.

…Strikeforce honored Frank Shamrock in the middle of their Fedor vs. Werdum event last Saturday night, allowing Shamrock to thank all of the people that helped him throughout his career. And then Frank announced his retirement from MMA. There is no doubt that he could still compete, but he chose to walk away safely and with head held high.
Here are other fighters that should call it a career.
Ken Shamrock
The truth is that Shamrock was being beaten badly years ago. He’s only fought twice since 2006. To comeback at age 46 with such a layoff would not be wise. But he is. Shamrock will fight Pedro Rizzo in July.
Jens Pulver
Jens has lost 7 of his last 8 fights. He went from the UFC to the WEC and still couldn’t keep up with the breed of MMA fighter. Yet Jens is heading back in the cage to fight again in August.
Chuck Liddell
Dana White and a slew of The Iceman’s fans fear for his health. Several times during the last season of The Ultimate Fighter it was hard to decipher what Chuck was saying. But the latest…

UFC 115 proving ground for Iceman, Ace & Vancouver - MMA

FightLaunch.com has one of the leading Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) blogs. The site also has some great MMA forums where you can discuss the latest mma news and get the scoop on every fighter.

…ll be talking UFC 115 on the Sirius Fight Club (Sirius 126/XM 243) Thursday at 2:45 p.m. EST.
Rich Franklin was home one night when the phone rang. On the line was Dana White with the news that Tito Ortiz had pulled out of his scheduled UFC 115 bout with Chuck Liddell to have neck surgery similar to the fusion procedure he received in October 2008 to correct lower back problems. It was deep into taping of Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter and the news was top secret to anyone beyond UFC headquarters and the house.
White asked for a favor: for Franklin to take over…

…We wanted to take some time and compile a highlight reel of the best MMA Knockouts from late April and May 2010. It is tough to define what makes a great MMA knockout. However, I feel that anytime one human being is able to knock another human being unconscious then that is warrant of consideration. The title says it all strange neck MMA knockout.

Why MMA Fans Should Be Following DREAM

DREAM is an exciting alternative to the promotions here in North America.

…Mousasi just lost his title. Champions don’t go fight in chump organizations.
If you don’t follow DREAM you’re missing out on some of the top-ranked fighters in the world. Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri are two of the top-ranked lightweights in the world. They’ll be battling for the DREAM lightweight title at DREAM 15 on July 10th.
Watch the legends do battle. Nick Diaz just fought Hayato Sakurai at DREAM 14 and Gracie Hunter Kazushi Sakuraba was on the card too. DREAM may not be PRIDE, but some of their biggest names are still going to war there.
You get to hear The Voice . Michael The Voice Schiavello is on the call for DREAM and he is a blast. Not only does he know MMA, his excitement is contagious and he is funny to boot. Check out some of his calls here. Although I am partial to Mauro Ranallo, The Voice has earned his nickname. He makes all the events he calls a lot of fun.
